Cleaning out the notebook from Mike Shanahans press conference on Monday to review the Redskins 34-27 loss to New England.
Shanahan didnt hide being critical of cornerback DeAngelo Halls unwillingness to help complete a tackle on Rob Gronkowski early in the game. Hall decided to watch as DeJon Gomes and Reed Doughty unsuccessfully tried to bring down the Patriots tight endtruck.
That was disappointing because one of the things DeAngelo usually does is finish, Shanahan said. A lot of corners dont like to tackle, but hes one of the more physical guys in the league.
I know he was embarrassed by it as was our entire football team. You have to finish when a guy is in bounds because things like that could happen.
Shanahan said officials got Santana Moss offensive pass interference call right in the final minute. The penalty happened in the end zone, pushed the Redskins back 10 yards and New England intercepted Rex Grossman (off a deflection) two plays later.
I agreed with the call, Shanahan said. You cant extend your arms. Im not sure how many times theyll offensive pass interference, but anytime theres an extension of the arms, its the proper call.
Shanahan continued to disagree with London Fletchers personal foul for hitting Tom Brady as the Patriots quarterback was beginning his slide.
Looking at the end zone copy with our film just reinforced how I felt after the game, Shanahan said.
Shanahan said he was pleased with how running back Evan Royster played in a relief role. The rookie rushed seven times for 44 yards.
If he keeps averaging over seven yards a carry, well let him play as much as he wants, Shanahan quipped.
For the second time in three games, a Graham Gano kickoff went out of bounds, allowing the opposing offense to start at their own 40-yard line. New England quickly moved down the field for a touchdown.
You dont want to give anybody the ball at the 40-yard line, Shanahan said. You would like a kickoff to be in the corner its a little easier to cover. But if it goes out of bounds, it defeats the purpose. It was just a hook. I thought Gano did a good job kicking the ball with some good hang time and good distance after that.
Shanahan said if right tackle Jammal Brown (groin) cant play, Tyler Polumbus would start against the Giants. At left tackle, Willie Smith and Sean Locklear will again split the practice snaps with the first-team offense.
After not playing a snap the last two games, running back Ryan Torain was inactive for the first time this year.
We had a few guys beat up, Shanahan said. It was better off for us to have Dominique Byrd up. Ryan was not going to play unless something happened to the two running backs.
For now, suspended left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis are not spending time at Redskin Park.
Its not perfectly clear right now, Shanahan said. Theyre going over all those rules with the new CBA.
Shanahan said the Redskins need more clarification, before inviting the players back to attend meetings.
