As soon as he tried to walk on his own along the sideline early in the Redskins Week 6 loss to Philadelphia, left guard Kory Lichtensteiger knew his season was over.
Lichtensteiger tore the ACL, MCL and lateral meniscus in his right knee and underwent surgery last week. He anticipates a recovery time of 6-8 months.
I walked off OK and that was encouraging but as soon as I got to the sideline, it kept buckling and I could tell there was no ligament in there holding it in place, he said Wednesday morning at Redskin Park. I knew it was definitely a season-ender.
For the first time since his injury, Lichtensteiger talked about his injury with reporters. He was injured when blocked by the Eagles Darryl Tapp during an interception. The block happened so far from the play, it doesnt appear on the TV or coaches tape.
Left tackle Trent Williams made a bee-line for Tapp after the block and called it a dirty hit. Lichtensteiger wouldnt go that far.
I dont think I can go out there and say something like that because I just dont know, Lichtensteiger said. It all happened so fast for me and to not be able to back that up with film, I cant say.
Describing the play in question, he said: All Im going off of is the split second that happened in my mind before the pain set in. I planted on it weird and he tried to throw me off. I saw him wheeling back to block me on the interception. I knew he was going to try and hit me so I was like, Im going to try and hit him first. As soon as I hit him, I planted awkwardly and it just collapsed it inside.
Because he cant sit in a chair, Lichtensteiger hasnt started attending offensive line meetings. He arrives at Redskin Park for a rehab session and then goes home to sit in his recliner.
My wife Mandi is getting sick of me, Lichtensteiger said. She has two babies him and the couples 3-month old baby to take care of. If you want to feel bad for anybody, feel bad for her.
To which Mandi replied on Twitter: Truth.
An unknown entering 2010 training camp, Lichtensteiger won the job from Derrick Dockery and was establishing himself as a solid NFL offensive lineman.
Thats the toughest part, Lichtensteiger said. I felt this was my year to do big things and its a contract year so its not great timing by any means. Hopefully I can get back and get healthy and Im sure I can before next season and get that spot back.
I can tell its going to be a slow process, but Im going to hang in there. Im ready for the rehab.
Carlos Moves On
49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers held a 10-minute conference call with D.C.-area media Wednesday and was his normal cheery self.
Rogers said he knew two years ago he would not re-sign with the Redskins. He inked a one-year contract with San Francisco after the lockout and has three interceptions.
It was time for me to leave, Rogers said. I didnt think the Redskins would re-sign me anyway. Most all their players come from outside. Im past the Redskins. Im over them. I want to play against my friends for bragging rights.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan cited a lack of consistency as to why the team wasnt interested in re-signing Rogers.
Defending The Play Calling
Shanahan was asked if hearingreading his son, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, getting ripped in the wake of last weeks shutout loss to Buffalo stung more than normal.
Believe me, I dont worry about the criticism, Mike said. All you have to worry about is what your game plan is and what you intend on doing. I understand theres going to be highs and lows. Ive been this a long time and weve had a lot of success.
There is going to be second guessing, especially when a lot of people have no idea. When youre not effective, youre going to get criticized. Hopefully we can do a much better job getting these guys ready to play at a higher standard and we better were playing a very good defensive football team.
The 49ers led the NFL in scoring defense.
