Earlier this season, Redskins kicker Graham Gano achieved a career-best by making a pair of 50-yard field goals.
That mark was obliterated during Sundays 19-11 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
As the first half expired, Gano drilled a 59-yard kick, the longest in Redskins franchise history.
I always feel like I have one of those in me, Gano said. I was pretty confidence I had the distance from there.
Gano felt after contact the kick might come up short.
I felt like I undercut it a little bit so I was wondering if it had the distance, he said. But when I have the adrenaline flowing through, Im sure how much distance I can get.
After the field goal, Gano spun and ran away from holder Sav Rocca and snapper Nick Sundberg.
I was really pumped, Gano said. I turned around started running so Sav or anybody else would lay me out.
The previous Redskins field goal record was a 57-yard make by Steve Cox against Seattle in Sept. 1986.
Leading the new injuries from the game for the Redskins was a left groin problem for right tackle Jammal Brown. He was injured late in the first quarter and tried to play with the injury before calling it a day.
I went back in and tried to go but I just didnt have the strength or lateral movement to do it, Brown said. I felt it stretch out and heard a little pop.
Said coach Mike Shanahan: He tried to go and came out the first play. For a guy like Jammal, he usually doesnt do that so it had to be serious.
Sean Locklear replaced Brown at right tackle.
Receiver Niles Paul (toe) isnt concerned about his injury. Defensive end Kedric Golston departed with an elbow injury.
Safety O.J. Atogwe (knee) missed his second game in three weeks.
Rogers Return A Win
49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers was able to greet former teammates Brian Orakpo and others after the game and his smile was present after San Franciscos win. Rogers had one tackle.
It was great, Rogers said. It was a total team effort. It was just something special to come to this place, the fans still love me and I cant ask for anything better.
Williams Disciplined For Penalty
Redskins left tackle Trent Williams was benched for one play after picking up a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty for shoving Justin Smith from behind. He also was flagged in Week 6 against Philadelphia.
I just talked to him about keeping your poise, Shanahan said. I told Trent, Weve been down this road before, youre a second-year player, keeping your poise is a hard thing to do but thats how you win football games.
Hurt Debuts At Left Guard
Seventh-round pick Maurice Hurt, who started the season on the practice squad, played his first NFL regular season snaps against San Francisco.
The tempo was a little faster and it took me some time to get used to it, Hurt said.
Will Montgomery moved back to center, replacing Erik Cook.
Anytime you lose a couple players, you have to find out what the best combination is, Shanahan said. We thought Will would be a lot better at center and we thought Maurice did a good enough job in practice to earn the position.
Tough Day For Banks
Redskins return man Brandon Banks struggles this year continued with two muffed punts (he recovered both), the first that he tried to catch at his own 3-yard line.
Youre accountable for everything you do, Shanahan said. Every time he touches the ball, he wants to make a big play. You can t fumble the ball at the 3 or possibly turn the football over on a punt return. Ball security first.
Redskins receiver Leonard Hankerson made his first NFL start. He caught four passes for 34 yards.
Receiver Anthony Armstrong was shut out for the second straight game.
Had the Redskins not scored a touchdown late, it would have marked only the second time in Shanahans head-coaching career (and first since 1988 with the Raiders) that his team went back-to-back games without a touchdown.
