Not only was Sundays 23-0 loss to Buffalo the first time a Mike Shanahan team had been blanked, the Redskins tied one of his futility records.
The Bills nine sacks equaled the nine allowed by the 1988 Los Angeles Raiders in a loss to the Rams.
Buffalo entered the game with our four sacks for the season. The Bills had that by halftime and added the rest when the Redskins were in pass-only mode.
It was the worst day of pass protection for the Redskins since allowing the Giants to get eight sacks 13 years ago.
Well go over the film and try to find the things we did wrong, right tackle Jammal Brown said Monday morning at Redskin Park.
It wont be tough.
Linemen losing one-on-one match-ups.
A rookie running back doesnt pick up a blitzing safety.
Receivers not getting open.
The quarterback holding on to the ball too long.
Everybody looks at the offensive line and says, Nine sacks. Its the offensive line. Thats not the case, coach Mike Shanahan said. There are a lot of people involved in sacks sometimes, its pass protection, sometime its route-running, sometimes its the quarterback. This game was no different.
Said Brown: They got a chance to go to some exotic blitzes stuff they probably didnt plan on running. But when you get a team down like that and knowing the opposition has to pass the ball in every situation, Im sure their defensive coordinator George Edwards could draw some stuff in the dirt to see what works.
Nearly everything worked for Buffalo, which got at least a half-sack from eight players.
The previous season high allowed was four by the Giants in the season opener.
Davis Injures Ankle
Tight end Fred Davis walked into the locker room Monday morning with a protective boot on his sprained ankle. Shanahan termed the injury a Grade 1 sprain, which is the mildest form and takes only a few days to recover from.
If Davis cant play or is limited, the Redskins two remaining tight ends are Logan Paulsen and Dominique Byrd. The latter signed last week and was inactive against Buffalo.
Of left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), Shanahan said: Well find out more on Wednesday but he has improved. Theres a chance hell be ready this week.
Armstrong Shut Out
Like his offense, receiver Anthony Armstrong was shut out the first time in two seasons he didnt have a catch while playing the full game. (He left the Week 3 loss at Dallas after 10 snaps and no catches).
The Redskins took some shots downfield to Armstrong but none connected.
Its always frustrating when you cant get a ball in your hands, he said. Sometimes thats the way the tables turn. Its been frustrating all year. I havent been able to make too much of an impact, but eventually, it will come. You just keep working, keep running routes and the ball will come your way.
Defenses have occasionally rolled a safety to help the cornerback on Armstrong deep downfield.
But if Im taking two people away, that means somebody should be open underneath, he said..
Asked if hell be more involved offensively this week, Shanahan continued to back-track from his Oct. 24 comment he would be more involved with the defense because they werent as prepared against Carolina. That generalization has turned into him citing a specific situation.
Last week I was referring to the counter option, some of the Wildcat, some of the things that you normally dont do, he said. What we do Monday, especially when you have a goose-egg on the board, you go back and look at things You go through all those things one at a time and collectively, you try to improve.
Shanahan cited a low kick by Graham Gano has the reason his 49-yard attempt was blocked. Their defensive linemen, there wasnt a guy that was scot-free, Shanahan said. Normally that ball is much higher. Usually a guy in that position doesnt block the kick.
San Francisco has been installed as a 3.5-point favorite over the Redskins.
