EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Rookie left tackle Trent Williams was limited to a few possessions of first-half work before being shut down because of a shoulder injury in the Redskins 31-7 loss to the New York Giants.

Stephon Heyer started the game and he and Williams alternated until the coaching staff decided to stick with Heyer.

Williams missed one practice during the week after being injured at his home.

Asked what happen at his house, Williams said: I just tripped, and didnt elaborate.

It aint bad, he said. It happened a couple days ago so its being kind of monitored. They could tell I was favoring it. Its a shoulder thats what I use on every play so it restricted me a little bit.

Embree Off To Boulder
Tight ends coach Jon Embree will leave the team Monday to begin his work as head coach at the University of Colorado.

Im ready to get out there and see what the landscape is like and get started recruiting, he said. With it being my alma mater and growing up out there, its the dream job Ive always wanted.

Quality control coach Sean McVay will supervise the tight ends.

Big Day For Thomas
Former Redskins receiver Devin Thomas was all smiles after the game even though he did not have a catch for the Giants.

Thomas downed a punt at the Redskins 5-yard line and later got a piece of Hunter Smiths punt. It was Thomas debut with the Giants following his release from the Redskins and short time with Carolina.

Of the blocked punt, Thomas said: I knew I had an opportunity to get in there and make a play. I got my hand out there and got a piece of the ball. It was a huge play because their backs were against the wall and we were able to capitalize on that play and walked away with some points.

Buchanon Sits
Cornerback Phillip Buchanon was demoted to nickel situations in the second half after being consistently bested by Giants receiver Derek Hagan

He wasnt playing good enough in the first half and was benched, Mike Shanahan said bluntly.

Hagan finished with seven catches for 65 yards. DeAngelo Hall followed Mario Manningham to both sides of the formation and limited him to two catches for 36 yards.

You just keep playing, Hall said of the inactivity. You keep trying to stay focused, keep working and eventually youll get an opportunity.

Quick Kicks
Shanahan on the Redskins effort level: The effort was there but we missed tackles. One right after another, I watched them as the game went along. To bring a guy Brandon Jacobs like that down, you need a lot of guys tackling and they have to be sure tackles. They were running through us.

London Fletchers interception of Eli Manning was his first of the season. Fletcher has defeated the Giants only once since he came to the Redskins before the 2007 season. We just have to be tougher, more physical and play sound, fundamental football, he said. Thats the thing about them they did.

Tight end Chris Cooley doesnt see the need for a fire-and-brimstone approach by him or any teammate. These are 30-year old men in this locker room youre not going to yell at them or boss them around, he said.
