Leftovers from Monday open locker room period at Redskin Park and coach Mike Shanahans press conference:
Didnt Consider Two-Point
Shanahan wouldnt place the blame on snapper Nick Sundberg andor holder Hunter Smith for Sundays point-after debacle that cost the Redskins a chance to force overtime against Tampa Bay.
The snap wasnt perfect was a little bit high, Shanahan said. Could it have been a better snap? Sure. Could Smith have gotten it down? Sure. Extra points, youre thinking 99.9 percent of making it and obviously youre disappointed when it doesnt happen.
Shanahan gave no consideration to going for a two-point conversion and a regulation victory.
Should I have? he asked. Ive gone for it before.
Shanahan went for two points in September 2008 and was successful when Jay Cutler threw to Eddie Royal with 24 seconds remaining in a 39-38 win over San Diego.
Shanahan said tempo dictates whether he goes for it.
Our defense was extremely tired two years ago and they had been moving the ball up and down the field and not slowed them down; I thought it was the right thing to do, to win it at that time, he said.
San Diego posted second-half scoring drives of 91, 71, 75 and 59 yards.
As for not going for it against Tampa Bay, Shanahan said: I felt like we had control of the football game.
Rogers Should Return
While safety LaRon Landry (Achilles tendon) will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list, Shanahan said cornerback Carlos Rogers (hamstring) should be available to play Sunday against the Cowboys.
Rogers has missed two straight games and three of the last four with injuries to both hamstrings.
No-Calls Frustrate Fletcher
Linebacker Brian Orakpo wasnt the only Redskins player to spout off about the lack of holding calls against Tampa Bay.
Inside linebacker London Fletcher joined the chorus after the game.
I dont understand it because you have two officials in the backfield now whose job is to watch the holding and watch the quarterback, he said. The game against the Giants, Orakpo probably got held probably 5-6 times. Obviously, he got held on the touchdown play big play, the biggest play of the game and to say youre not looking at that, what are you looking at? You watching the ballgame like a fan? Your job is to look at the holding.
Best Rushing Game
The Redskins 399 yards were their third-highest of the year and the 188 rushing yards were by far the best total, 19 more yards than the previous high.
Everybody on the offensive line, everybody on the offense understood the weaknesses of that defense and understood how we were blocking, center Casey Rabach said. We just kept plugging away 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 yards those were the norm in the first half and it makes you feel good.
Ryan Torain rushed for a career-high 172 yards, 158 of which came in the first half.
I thought the offensive line did an excellent job, Shanahan said. Anytime you have that type of yardage in the first half, its a lot of people doing a lot of things the right way.
