Despite an offer by new Denver Broncos coach John Fox, a league source said Monday that Danny Smith will remain with the Redskins as special teams coordinator.

Smith, who will enter his eighth season with the Redskins, has known Fox for years but had not worked on a staff with him. Fox was fired last month by Carolina and hired by Denver late last week.

It is expected that Smith will sign a contract extension with the Redskins.

Smith, safeties coach Steve Jackson and defensive assistant Kirk Olivadotti are the only three assistants still on staff from Joe Gibbs first year in 2004.

Under Smiths watch this year, the Redskins were 10th in punt returns, 14th in kickoff returns, second in punt coverage and 29th in kickoff coverage.
