Since the Giants are Super Bowl champs, the Redskins could be starting their 2012 NFL season a few days early. The tradition that has been established over the last several years is that the champions host the Thursday night season opener. That means that one of New Yorks eight home scheduled home games will be played in prime time a few days before the rest of the NFL gets underway. The Redskins, of course, are one of those eight opponents. Could they end up in the opener? At first glance, it seems unlikely with the Packers, Saints and Steelers scheduled to come to MetLife Stadium in 2012 along with division rivals Philadelphia and Dallas. However, Fox and CBS may not be so willing to give up premiere matchups like those to NBC. And the game generally gets very good ratings no matter who is playing so the NFL may decide to play up the angle that the Redskins beat the Gaints twice in 2011 and pit the two old rivals against each other.Still, chances are that the NFL would choose one of the more glamorous matchups. However, one thing could happen that would propel the Redskins into the role of being one of the favorites to open the season. That would be the addition of Peyton Manning to the Redskins roster. The inaugural Manning vs. Manning as division rivals would make all Redskins-Giants matchups prized prime-time material.
Redskins unlikely for Thursday 2012 opener unless . . .
