According to a report in Sovietsky Sport, the Capitals have begun contract negotiations with top forward prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov and will meet with the highly regarded right wing at the World Junior Championships later this month in Edmonton and Calgary.
We will meet with representatives of the club and see what they have to offer, Kuznetsov told Sovietsky Sport.
The World Junior Championships will begin Dec. 26 in Edmontons Rexall Place and conclude Jan 5 in Calgarys Scotiabank Saddledome.
Kuznetsov, 19, was taken by the Capitals in the first round (26th overall) of the 2010 NHL draft. Through 28 games with Chelyabinsk Traktor he has 12 goals and 10 assists with 12 penalty minutes and is a plus-6.
Kuznetsov is under contract with Chelyabinsk but has stated the club would allow him to sign with the Capitals and break ties with the club this season. If the two sides can agree on a contract the Caps would need to clear salary space for the highly skilled right wing.
In other news, Caps right wing Jay Beagle skated Saturday for the first time since he experienced dizziness two weeks ago. Beagle has not played since suffering a concussion in a fight with Arron Asham on Oct. 13.
