MOBILE, Ala. Practice notes from the North (Vikings coaches) teams second workout of the week at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The running backs had a tough time in one-on-one pass protection. As was the case with the Redskins Roy Helu, many starting running backs in college arent three-down players and thus arent required to recognize blitzes. In this drill, Shea McClellin (Boise State) beat Chris Polk (Washington), Bobby Wagner (Utah State) beat Isaiah Pead (Cincinnati) and Lavonte Davis (Nebraska) ran over Polk.Quarterback Russell Wilson (Wisconsin) was completely unimpressive. First, hes short (5-foot-10 12). Second, he has a shot put-like throwing motion. Third, hes short. During one particular set, he underthrew an open Marvin Jones (California) on a 9 route and threw low and behind an open Marvin McNutt (Iowa), who had beaten cornerback Donnie Fletcher (Boston College) on a quick slant. The biggest flaw the football takes a long time to get to where Wilson wants it to go.Like the South team did Monday, quarterbacks Wilson, Kirk Cousins (Michigan State) and Kellen Moore (Boise State) had several bungled snaps that either resulted in a fumble or disrupted the rhythm of the play.Moore, who isnt very tall either (just shy of 6-0), but he did show some decent arm strength on an out-route throw to McNutt. The highlight of d-line vs. o-line drills was Tony Bergstrom (Utah) pancaking Billy Winn (Boise State).During 11-vs.-11, George Iloka (Boise State) intercepted Cousins. The most impressive offensive player was receiver Gerell Robinson (Arizona State). He showed good speed and hands. Robinson is 6-foot-3 and 223 pounds and averaged an impressive 18 yards per catch last year for the Sun Devils. If Alabama is in charge of the South roster (seven players, but two are hurt), Boise State rules the North team with five players. The South team, coached by the Redskins, begins practice at 2:45 p.m. Eastern.Contact OHalloran atrohalloran@comcastsportsnet.com
