Redskins coach Mike Shanahan held his first in-town press conference since the day after losing last season with a 6-10 record.

Cleaning out the notebook from his 20-minute session at Redskin Park:

On the draft process being impacted by no free agency.

Weve had the same schedule every year it takes 5-6 weeks of going from 7 in the morning to 6, 7 in the evening," Shanahan said. "Its a process that takes some time. Its a long and tedious process but one you have to do.

On the drafts quarterback depth.

This is deeper than most of the drafts Ive been in; in fact, its much deeper, Shanahan said.

Of Auburns Cam Newton, Shanahan said: It takes only one person to like you and feel you can do the job and help your organization win. At least in my experience with quarterbacks, you have to take a look at the quarterback and say, Can he work within our system? Everybody sees what type of athlete Cam is and hes obviously off-the-charts athletically. Whoever does pick him will run a system hes comfortable with because hes one heckuva athlete.

Before the lockout began, the Redskins signed veteran safety O.J. Atogwe to team with LaRon Landry.

I liked everything about him, Shanahan said. I liked the way he played and I loved the way he handles himself on and off the football field. Hes a natural leader. Everything that you look for in a guy, I thought he brought to the table so when he was out there available and we were able to land him, I felt really, really good.

Teams wont be allowed to sign undrafted free agents but Shanahan said the Redskins will be calling potential players during the latter stages of the draft.

Everybodys going to do that, he said. Its part of the process. Everybody is going to do their due diligence.

Shanahan said the Redskins have a good feel for which of their own free agents they want to retain.

You have conversations and yet youre not sure if somebody is going to go out and according to you, overpay for a player, he said.
