MOBILE, Ala. If there was any doubt Mike Shanahan wouldntbe hands-on leading the South team in this weeks Senior Bowl, it was erasedabout 30 minutes into Mondays opening practice.White 80! White 80! Shanahan yelled, instructing Arizonaquarterback Nick Foles on his pre-snap cadence. It was almost assuredly the loudest volume Shanahan hadcoached during an open practice session in his two years with the Redskins. This came during a bundled drill in which quarterbacksfumbled snaps and offensive linemen had false starts. When the Redskinsexecutive vice president saw enough, he decided to get his hands dirty andstart instructing. The entire Redskins coaching staff is instructing the 50-manroster leading into Saturdays game, only Shanahans second time he has hadthis level of involvement. As an assistant with Denver, he also made the trip.
I would much rather be on the field than on the stands,he said. You get a chance to know these players, players youre going todraft. You get a chance to see not only their athletic ability, how they handlethemselves, how they relate to the coaches and other players. Its a goodevaluation process.Mondays practice was expectedly choppy. One coach observingthe workout said the first day is more about how the team stretches and linesup than execution. The hitting will pick up as the week goes along.Monday was a warm-up to get their legs back a lot ofthe guys havent been working out much the last month and some were prettyactive two weeks ago in games, Shanahan said.Shanahan, who didnt attend last years Senior Bowl Week, intends to get a read on the prospects on the field and behind the scenes. You get to see how they handle themselves in gamesituations, practice situations, pressure situations, he said. Its somethingI enjoy doing.Contact OHalloran at rohalloran@comcastsportsnet.com
