Kyle Orton, absolutely.
Peyton Manning, if healthy.
Matt Flynn, not likely.
Thats the consensus among league sources regarding the teams future starting quarterback.
Orton and Flynn are prospective free agents and Manning is expected to hit the open market before the March 13 start of free agency.
The Redskins could have claimed Orton off waivers late in the season and thought about it, a source said, but didnt want to damage the locker rooms morale because of his non-relationship with Rex Grossman. The two competed for the same job in Chicago and Grossman was well-respected by his Redskins teammates.
Plus, what could have been gained? Orton, who has started for Denver and Kansas City, likely would have opted for free agency after the season anyway.
However, possible Grossman-Orton clashes wouldn't be an issue for 2012, because Grossman also is a free agent, so the Redskins likely wouldn't bring him back if they signed Orton.
The only quarterback the Redskins currently have under contract is John Beck, who failed in a brief stint as a starter this season.
Trading for Manning would make no sense because of his uncertain medical future and the reported quick resolution to his divorce from the Colts would make teams like the Redskins, Jets and Miami smart to wait the situation out.
And as Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said during an interview with CSNwashington.com last week, Mannings injury isnt like a knee or ankle. Translation: One hit and hes done.
Plus, the obvious question is: Why would Manning want to play for the Redskins? Maybe if they could first lure a receiver like Colts teammate Pierre Garcon.
Flynn, with all of two NFL starts, has been likened by some Redskins personnel as a lesser version of Kevin Kolb -- and they didnt like him, either. Most speculation has Flynn destined for Miami and new coach Joe Philbin, who was Green Bays offensive coordinator. But certainly not at a big price a source said Flynn would command upper-range back-up money -- 3 million per year.
