Randy Edsall will make his debut as Maryland coach in style, as the Terps will open their season with a nationally televised Labor Day matchup with the Miami Hurricanes.
The Canes will be the first of four teams to visit College Park to start the season. West Virginia makes its first visit to Maryland since 2007 on Sept. 17, followed by Temple (Sept. 24) and Towson (Oct. 1).
The Terps and Tigers have never played. The Maryland-Towson game was originally scheduled for the opening weekend of the season.
We were approached by the ACC about playing Miami in a prime-time national broadcast on ESPN, Maryland director of athletics Kevin Anderson said in a press release. Based on the positive experience that our student-athletes and many of our fans enjoyed last season playing on Labor Day, we agreed to the request.
We are excited to have the opportunity to open the 2011 season in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on national TV against an ACC rival. We also want to thank Towson University for working with us and the league office on adjusting the schedule.
Another highlight on the 2011 slate is the Terps first ever visit to FedEx Field to face Notre Dame Nov. 12. (The Irish will be the home team.)
