D.C. United looks to advance further into the Carolina Challenge Cup preseason tournament tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. against the Charleston Battery. The Black-and-Red outlasted the Chicago Fire, 1-0, Saturday night and is now favored to capture the Cup for the third straight year.
Newly acquired Hamdi Salihi played as advertised. Going most of the night without any solid looks, Salihi caught one opportunity, took it and scored the lone goal in the 66th minute.
Joe Willis, who's standing in while Bill Hamid is at U.S. Olympic camp, had a great showing. He recorded five saves, including a crucial penalty kick stop early in the match.
The Emiliano Dudar-Ethan White center-back tandem was outstanding. The duo came on in the second half and immediately stepped up the level of United's defense.
Coming back from a broken leg suffered in September 2011, Chris Pontius looks better than expected. His speed is returning nicely, and his burst seems to still be intact.
