In what could be a move intended to make room for another NHL salary, the Capitals have assigned forward Keith Aucoin to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.
Aucoin, 33, was recalled by the Caps on Thursday and joined the club on its trip to Florida, where they split a pair of 2-1 decisions to the Panthers and Lightning. The Caps are back in action Mondya night in Ralieigh against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Aucoin did not play in either of the two games in Florida, but it seems unusual for the club to return him to Hershey and not carry an extra forward for the remainder of their road trip, which concludes Wednesday night in Ottawa.
If there is a trade in the works for a forward, the player most likely to go in a deal would be defenseman Jeff Schultz, who has two more years on a contract that pays him 2.75 million a season.
