So it's only one day into Wizards' training camp and we media folk are only allowed to see the last 30 minutes of practice, but here a few observations I took away from the opening night of training camp.
First off, the new red, white and blue practice uniforms are snazzy, just like the new uniforms which I assume they will sport in the pre-season opener this Friday at Verizon Center.
John Wall's jumper does look better. That was one of the big things the second year Wizards guard was going to have work on this summer and, from the few minutes I saw in a shooting drill, his release was much quicker. Let's see if it translates in games.
Despite the lockout, the team looked in pretty decent shape, but coach Flip Saunders said he will gauge the overall conditioning at the second practice to see how the players respond.
Jordan Crawford is a lively guy. The second-year pro was clearly the most vocal player on the floor on opening day. If Nick Young doesn't return. Crawford will surely be the first to tell you that the shooting guard spot should be his.
The rookies actually looked good. Again, it's just one practice but Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton and Shelvin Mack appeared comfortable on the floor.
Vesely said his favorite player growing up was Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki and if he can become half the player Nowitzki is, then the Wizards got a great pick at 6.
At the end of practice, Saunders gave Wall an actual hard hat with the DC logo on the side for his hard work. Wall had the option to give it to another teammate but he chose to keep it.
I wonder who will earn it tonight?
