Cold and Muddy

Early in the week, ramps might be frozen. Exercise care if you venture out! Water temperatures should remain in the upper 30s.

You can fish warm or cold water, depending on location. NBC Ch. 4 meteorologist "Weather Kim" Martucci says, “Temperatures in the 40s and windy for Monday. Tuesday will be bitterly cold with highs only in the teens. It's not until Thursday when daytime highs will be above freezing. A warmer weekend with highs into the mid 50s with a chance of shower.”

Warm water spots like Blue Plains and Four Mile Run can be 10 degrees or more warmer! The water is also clearer! Two techniques work well, Carolina rigs and suspending jerkbaits. For Carolina rigs, work the bait slowly, stopping frequently!

Use GAMMA edge fluorocarbon leaders. For suspending jerkbaits, Lucky Craft Pointer 78s in Shad patterns on 10-pound test Edge with long pauses will be effective. Long casts are preferred!  Also try jigs, drop shot and shaky head.

For the rest of the river, look for out-of-the-current areas with steep drops, like Belle Haven Cove, National Harbor, and the Spoils Cove. There is also a pretty good hole near the military docks in Pohick Bay. Work Silver Buddy Lures on 10 pound test Edge to shallow edges and slightly burped down drops with pauses. A dragging presentation will work too. Also spinning reel presentations on 6-pound test, like Mizmo chartreuse grubs and Mann's Stingray grubs on ¼-ounce jig heads moved horizontally along the bottom with slow movements and frequent stops. Punisher ¼-ounce hair jigs with Punisher rattles and plastic chunks. Toss this on 6-pound Edge too. All baits need a good soaking in garlic Jack's Juice spray.
