Fishing Report by Steve Chaconas
Poor Weather Continues!
More of the same this week. A bit windy, stained water, and tough conditions.
But the good news is water is warming as longer days are allowing the water to warm just above 40 degrees. NBC Ch. 4 meteorologist "Weather Kim" Martucci says, “Not getting a break in the weather this week as daytime highs will be around 40 with the exception of Tuesday where 50 will be the high, but will bring rain. Overnight lows in the low to mid 30s. Warmer weather coming for the weekend with highs close to 50.”
Looking for the clearest water will help, but slow presentations are key. Suspending jerkbaits like Lucky Craft Pointers and Bevy Shads worked in clear water discharge areas are effective. Longer pauses are best. Dropping line size to 10-pound test GAMMA Edge Fluorocarbon line on casting reels or 6-8 pound test GAMMA Copoly on spinning gear to make long casts is necessary.
In other areas, fish are still near deep water on drops. The more stained, try to fish a bit shallower. It's still slow fishing, but Mann's Stingray grubs on 6-pound test soaked in garlic flavor Jack's Juice on a 1/4-ounce ball head jig will produce. Drop shot, split shot and light line presentations including MIZMO tubes with insert heads are also good ideas. Black/blue Punisher hair jigs with Missile Baits Twin Turbo grubs worked as slow as possible...while sitting and shaking is a good bet this week.
But the best bait to have in your hand is the Silver Buddy. This will allow coverage of more water to locate fish and depths they’re holding. Short burps on 12-pound test while keeping the bait on the bottom as much as possible. Bites can be taps or just weight.
