For the first time since he came onto the Redskins roster, Brandon Banks will not be returning kicks today.
The Redskins have listed him as inactive for today’s game against the Ravens. In recent weeks Mike Shanahan has expressed concern with Banks’ lack of productivity—he is near the bottom of the league in both kickoff and punt returns—and he has apparently decided to make a change.
It is likely that Niles Paul, who has been lining up deep on kickoffs next to Banks, will be the kick returner. Wide receiver Santana Moss and cornerback Richard Crawford are listed as the backup punt returners on the depth chart. We won’t know which one of them will line up deep for the Ravens’ first punt, or if someone else will.
Banks has been the Redskins’ kick and punt returner since he was moved from the practice squad to the active roster for the fourth game of the 2010 season. He has also been playing a role in the Redskins’ option offense. On the year he has seven rushing attempts for 36 yards and he has caught 8 passes for 15 yards.
