As of this writing, the Redskins have completed the work of trimming their roster to 53 players.
According to reports they have put OL Maurice Hurt (knee) on the in-season PUP list. LB Rob Jackson and DE Jarvis Jenkins will be suspended for the first four games for violations of the league’s substance policy.
We have learned who most of the players who have been released are through media reports. Here is the list so far:
OT Tony Pashos was trying to come back after being out of football last year. He was strictly a right tackle and that hurt his chances as Mike Shanahan prefers versatility in his offensive line reserves.
Undrafted free agent OT Xavier Nixon has good size and athletic ability but he has a lot to learn before making an NFL roster. He’s a practice squad candidate.
DE Chigbo Anunoby never made much of an impression in training camp.
The Redskins signed OLB Vic So'oto with two games left last year and brought him back for a look this season. After the Redskins signed Darryl Tapp and drafted Brandon Jenkins, the numbers were against him and he never really had a chance.
The biggest surprise of the day was the release of CB Chase Minnifield. It looked like he was progressing well during the offseason and in training camp. After Richard Crawford went out for the season with a knee injury, it looked like Minnifield was a lock. But the coaches wanted the more experienced Jerome Murphy instead and will offer Minnifield a spot on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
RB Keiland Williams is a good special teams player and many thought he might make the roster based on that. But they opted instead to keep Evan Royster, who is a better runner who can play special teams.
The coaches like TE Emmanuel Ogbuehi but he was never going to make the team as the fifth tight end on a team that was going to keep four. He could stay around on the practice squad.
Some thought that DE Dominique Hamilton might surprise and slip onto the roster as a suspension replacement for Phillip Merling. But he couldn’t beat out the veteran.
WR Skye Dawson flashed some ability in practice and some preseason games but he was too inexperienced. There are reports that the Redskins do not plan to extend him an offer to join the practice squad.
In this second try to make the Redskins—an injury derailed his first attempt last year—WR Lance Lewis was better but still too inconsistent. He has size (6-2) and some ability, he could have an NFL future down the road.
S DeJon Gomes started four games at strong safety last year but he was replaced by Reed Doughty in the starting lineup. He never really had the trust of the coaches in coverage although they liked his special teams play.
OL Tevita Stevens was injured some in training camp and never really gained traction in his competition for a roster spot.
Former Patriot DL Ron Brace brought experience but he didn’t do anything memorable.
The only 2013 draft pick to be released was RB Jawan Jamison, the team’s seventh-round pick. He has some zone running ability but he needs to get stronger.
WR Nick Williams became the fans’ favorite dark horse to make the roster during the preseason but he just didn’t have enough experience to stick. He is a practice squad candidate.
Former Titans’ OL Kevin Matthews was brought in as insurance in the interior of the line. But second-year linemen Josh LeRibeus and Adam Gettis developed as they hoped making
Undrafted ILB Will Compton from Nebraska showed some ability and was a sure tackler but it came down to numbers at linebacker. He is a practice squad candidate.
ILB Marin Burdette is another undrafted rookie who just faced too much experience in front of him.
On Thursday against the Bucs it looked like WR Dezmon Briscoe was on his way to a big night that might have earned him a roster spot. But he suffered a shoulder injury that may require surgery and he ended up being waived with an injury designation.
