Art Briles opts for Baylor over Redskins
This morning it was Bill Cowher. Now another coach who has been tied to the Redskins’ open head coaching job pulled himself out of the running.
Art Briles of Baylor was on the Mike Shanahan replacement wish list of many fans. But earlier today he tweeted the following:
Contrary to reports and rumors I am a Baylor Bear - 2013 Big 12 Champs— Coach Art Briles (@CoachArtBriles) January 3, 2014
That’s not definitive enough for you? After all, he says that he’s a Baylor Bear right now. But how about tomorrow, or in a week or so?
But John McClain of the Houston Chronicle grew up in Waco and graduated from Baylor and he made a more declarative statement about the coach:
Art Briles will stay at Baylor: You can take it to the bank— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) January 3, 2014
And the Redskins, who have been mostly hush-hush about possible coaching candidates, decided to let everyone know that Briles is not a candidate for their head coaching job by posting Briles’ full statement on their website.
Many were attracted to the notion of Briles bringing his innovative offensive system to the NFL and, specifically, to the Redskins. But there were concerns about the perception that Robert Griffin III had too much control over the operation at Redskins Park if his former college coach was brought on board.
