Sports Talk Live: Did the Redskins know about Jackson's upcoming suspension?
Carriker was first injured in Week 2 against the Rams and missed the remainder of the 2012 campaign after undergoing surgery. The injury dealt a blow to the Redskins’ pass rush; the 28-year-old was coming off a stellar 2011 season in which he registered 37 tackles and a career-best 5.5 sacks.
The setback occurred toward the end of last season, Shanahan acknowledged. Shanahan declined to elaborate on the nature of the setback or how it occurred, telling reporters in Phoenix on Wednesday, “I could tell you, but I don’t want get into it.”
The original prognosis was that Carriker would be sidelined five months and would potentially be ready to participate in the team's offseason workouts. Now it's unclear when he'll return. Asked if he believes Carriker will be ready to start the 2013 season, Shanahan said he was not sure.
“I’m still hoping he will be ready,” Shanahan said.
Carriker reworked his contract earlier this month as the Redskins sought ways to create space underneath their penalty-reduced salary cap.
