Barry Cofield broke his right hand in a preseason game against the Steelers on August 19. For the first two games of the regular season he wore a club-like cast to protect it. The past two games the cast has shrunk, giving him more of hand to work with.

Having some fingers free helped him against the Raiders. “The first sack I had last week I kind of twisted around him around a little bit and I grabbed him with both hands,” said Cofield. “If I only had one hand he might have escaped out of there and that's not what I want.”

“I want to have that for myself,” he added with a laugh.

The injury should be close to fully healed. Cofield said that it was a six-to-eight week injury and it happened just over seven weeks ago

“It's not an excuse, it's not an issue. I'll continue to tape it up and do whatever I have to do to be smart,” he said. “In reality, it really doesn't affect me any more. It hasn't been an excuse even when I had the club and it's not going to be one now.”

Although he was reluctant to blame the cast for any issues with his play, he said that some problems did creep in. “You really can't think about it but when I look back on tape there were some plays there's just little things here and there as far as grabbing and tackling that you can't get done with one hand.”
