Mike Shanahan on Kyle's future, Dallas week
If the Redskins want Jon Gruden to be their next head coach, it looks like they will have some competition.
Before we get into this, let’s to some mandatory hitting of the brakes here. The Redskins still have a coach in Mike Shanahan and Gruden has let it be known that he intends to return to the ESPN Monday night football broadcast booth in 2014.
But Shanahan’s job status is widely believed to be shaky and Gruden’s insistence that he wants to continue on Monday nights could just be a way of saying that it’s going to cost a ton of money to get him back on the sidelines.
There have been rumors (not reports, just rumors, mind you) that the Redskins could be all-in on Gruden if they are in the market for a coach. If Gruden does throw his hat in the ring the Washington would not be the only interested party. There are reports that the Houston Texans would like to talk to him. It was rumored that he had some interest in the University of Texas job. And now, former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon, who played for Gruden in Oakland, said that a Gruden 2.0 there could happen.
“I’ve had conversations with Jon in the past,” Gannon told 95.7 The Game in San Francisco (via Pro Football Talk) on Tuesday. “I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibilities.”
Like the Redskins, the Raiders have a coach, Dennis Allen. But he could be on the hot seat and owner Mark Davis could jettison the second-year coach if there was a chance to grab Gruden.
One possible roadblock for Gruden to the Redskins that might not exist for the Raiders is that he would want to shop for the groceries. “Gannon thinks that Gruden ‘certainly’ would want final say over the personnel,” according to the PFT report.
That was the model that the Redskins have had under Shanahan and had with Marty Schottenheimer and Joe Gibbs in the last decade. It’s has been successful only for a season here and there and many believe that the Redskins need to go with the more traditional power structure with a general manager empowered to make personnel decisions.
It may be premature to speculate about a possible Gruden-Redskins but it’s good to be prepared because when things start moving they could start moving fast.
