With the deadline for the Redskins being able to put the franchise tag on linebacker Brian Orakpo less than 24 hours away, all is quiet. That may not be a good sign for the chances of the team retaining its leader in sacks for four of the past five years.
If the Redskins do not tag Orakpo by the Monday 4 p.m. deadline they will have another eight days to sign him to a contract before he would hit the open market. The conventional wisdom is that Orakpo is very likely to end up playing for another team in 2014 if he is not signed before the start of free agency on March 11.
But it’s important to keep in mind that less than a week ago the same conventional wisdom was that Orakpo would have been tagged by now. So there could be some more twists and turns. But the Redskins and their fans should begin to plan for, or at least contemplate, life after Orakpo.
