3 and out: Keys to a Redskins win in Denver
Safety Reed Doughty has been ruled out for Sunday’s game in Denver, the team announced Saturday afternoon. Doughty, who sustained a concussion in last week’s game, did not travel with the team.
Without Doughty, the Redskins will be missing both of their starting safeties as they face Peyton Manning and the NFL’s top passing (and scoring) offense. Brandon Meriweather will be serving his one game suspension Sunday.
On Thursday, defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said reserve safeties Bacarri Rambo, Jose Gumbs and Trenton Robinson as well as cornerback E.J. Biggers had been getting reps in practice. Haslett also figures to get creative with his defensive backs as he attempts to fill the void.
Doughty, meantime, had been limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday but did not participate at all on Friday. Doughty, a native of Greeley, Colo., said earlier this week that he had purchased 40 tickets for friends and family to attend the game.
Doughty is also the special teams captain.
“It helps that we have such a versatile group,” cornerback Josh Wilson said this week. “[DeAngelo] Hall, myself, E.J., we’ve all had experience standing back there [at safety]. So it helps that our group can have anybody lineup anywhere.”
