The Redskins reported that 57 of the 63 players on their roster reported to the first day of the offseason program on Monday. We now know who one of the missing players was.Jabar Gaffney told Chris Russell of ESPN 980 that he was told not to report to Redskins Park for the first two weeks of the program. He said that they are looking to deal him.I want to be playing, Gaffney said. Unfortunately, its not going to be with the Redskins. They are trying to trade me.Russell said that he confirmed what Gaffney told him through a league source. The source also said that if the Redskins are unable to deal Gaffney before the draft, the teams leading receiver in 2011 could be released. If Gaffney does go, it would be the often fatal combination of age a money that likely will be responsible. He is 31 and he is schedule to make 2.65 million in 2011. Both of those numbers are significant to a team trying to get younger and that is squeezed up against the salary cap.Gaffney also raised eyebrows last week with a series of strange, inflammatory tweets from his verified account that seemed to involve his wife and NFL cornerback Lito Sheppard, Gaffneys cousin. He later claimed that his account was hacked before deleting it."It wasn't me. I'm off of it, because of what happened, Gaffney told Russell. All I can do is live my life. I'm not a thug, I'm not."That may or may not have been a factor in the decision to trade him but being in a spotlight in a negative way such as that could not have helped. The Redskins are asking him to stay away from the facility as they could be liable for his 2012 salary if he got injured while training on team property. The CBA makes it difficult for teams to keep players out for very long, however, so it is likely that a solution will have to be reached by sometime shortly after the draft.
