John Feinstein on why Gruden had to name RG3 starter
Jay Gruden hasn’t had much of a chance to evaluate the Redskins’ quarterbacks but he is willing to say that there won’t be a QB competition between Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.
Appearing on LaVar and Dukes on 106.7 The Fan, Gruden was unequivocal when asked who the starting quarterback will be.
“Robert Griffin III is the starter,” Gruden said, via Chad Dukes. “There will be no competition.”

The headline news would have been if Gruden had hedged on the question. The team spent three first-round picks and a second-rounder to get Griffin in the 2012 draft. It has been widely assumed that whoever took the job would have to be committed to Griffin being the starter.
But it was good to get some finality on the question. It seems that Gruden is an RG3 fan and the fates of the two are intertwined for at least the next few years. One will not be successful without the other being successful.
