Jay Gruden eager to get started as Redskins head coach

Even though Jay Gruden has been on the job for about a week and a half, he will not be heading down to Mobile to attend Senior Bowl practices. Nor will offensive coordinator Sean McVay.

But that doesn’t mean that they won’t know what is going on.

For one thing, Bruce Allen, some scouts, and some members of the coaching staff, including Jim Haslett, will be making the trip. They will take detailed notes on what they see.

In addition, all of the practices and the game are filmed. Gruden will be able to review those tapes all he wants.

What it boils down to is a matter of priorities. The draft isn’t until May 8, about three and a half months from now. In between now and then Gruden has to finish hiring his assistant coaches assemble a playbook, plan offseason workouts including a pre-draft veteran minicamp, and, most importantly to this situation, attend the NFL Combine in late February. There he will have a chance to meet the players he didn’t have the opportunity to get face time with in Mobile.

Finally, remember that the coach is not in charge of the draft. That will be Allen and Scott Campbell for the most part. Certainly Gruden will have input but it will be the job of the scouting department to sift through the prospects, throw out the ones that are not fits, and let Gruden give his feedback on the players that remain.

(This seems like as good a time as any to mention that our Tarik El-Bashir will be in Mobile all week to bring you coverage from there.)
