The reported increase in the salary cap isn’t all good news for the Redskins. A $130 million cap would make it a bit more expensive for the team to keep free agent linebacker Brian Orakpo around.

There has been plenty of speculation that the Redskins will use the franchise tag on Orakpo, their best defensive player. The salary that comes with the tag is tied to the salary cap. The higher the cap goes, the higher the tagged player’s salary goes.

Under the previous cap estimate of $126.5 million, Orakpo would have received a salary of about $10.9 million if the Redskins tagged him. But with a $130 million cap the tag salary would climb to about $11.2 million, according to former agent Joel Corry.

That’s not a huge increase in salary on a percentage basis, a shade over one percent. And the additional $300,000 would chew up only two tenths of percent of the cap. But a few hundred thousand here and there and pretty soon you’re talking about some real money.
