Is Shanahan on the hot seat?

Josh Morgan was inactive for the first time during his tenure in Washington on Sunday.

Morgan’s benching, though, might not last very long because fellow wide receiver Leonard Hankerson has suffered a knee injury that might require surgery, Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday.

“I’ve got a lot of belief in Josh Morgan,” Shanahan said. “We did make the switch for Nick Williams because I wanted to take a look at [Williams] as a punt returner. [But] I do have a lot of confidence in Josh that he’ll come back strong and help us this week as a wide receiver.”

Morgan led the Redskins in receptions last season with 48 but had seen his playing time dwindle this season due to the emergence of Hankerson. Morgan, who has only 11 catches, also lost his punt return job to Williams. But given Williams’ shaky debut Sunday, there’s a chance Morgan will resume in that role, as well.

“I explained to him what he needs to do in both special teams and at wide receiver to get to the level that I think he can get to, because he does have the ability to be a Pro Bowl player—and I want to get that out of him,” Shanahan added.
