NFL spokesman Greg Aiello just tweeted that the NFL will increase offseason rosters from 80 to 90 players, effective at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The move was discussed at the owners meetings last month but was tabled for later consideration. According to Aiello, the NFL Executive Council approved the measure today. The increase is not as large as it may seem at first. With the 80-player limit, unsigned draft picks and some other players would not count against the limit. Under the new limit, the draft picks and others would count. There also is a change in the schedule for roster reduction during training camp. The rosters will have to be cut from 90 to 80 after the third preseason game. The final cut from 80 to 53 will take place after the final preseason game. That means that there will the 864 players suddenly unemployed less than a week before the start of the season.
