Lorenzo Alexander leaves for Arizona

Lorenzo Alexander’s best season as a Redskin also was his last.

The free agent special teams ace and linebacker, as expected, signed with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, officially ending his six season tenure in Washington. He confirmed his departure via Twitter:

It's official, I'm an Arizona Cardinal! I appreciate all the love an Support I received in DC.

Alexander led the NFL with 21 tackles on special teams in 2012 and earned his first Pro Bowl appearance thanks to that stellar effort. The 29-year-old linebacker also saw an increased role on defense, making 47 tackles and 2.5 sacks, both career highs.

According to an NFL source, Alexander signed a three-year contract. Financial terms are not known at this time.

It’s believed Alexander was courted by the Redskins, 49ers, Cardinals and Steelers, among other teams. And as of late Tuesday,  Alexander was still undecided.

His agent, JR Rickert tweeted that Alexander would indeed be leaving the Redskins. But when asked if he had indeed made up his mind, Alexander told CSNWashington.com, “haven’t decided.”

Well, it appears he reached his decision after sleeping on it.

In recent weeks, Alexander has said that he wanted to remain in Washington and might even accept a small hometown discount to stay. After all, he has a strong bond to the community and co-owns a business in Ashburn.

But he also was quick to acknowledge that it was very likely that the Redskins might not be able to be competitive with bids from other teams due to the $18 million salary cap penalty they’re set to absorb for a second straight season.

In the end, that’s likely what happened.

And so now the Redskins are in need of a new captain on special teams.
