NEW YORK -- Its finally officially official. Robert Griffin III is a Redskin.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Baylor was going to Washington with the second pick in the draft soon after the Colts made Stanford QB Andrew Luck the first overall selection. Redskins fans have been counting down to that moment ever since early March, when the team struck a deal with the Rams to move up in the draft.

The trade was one of the biggest in NFL history, and it was a costly one for the Redskins. To move from the sixth overall spot to the second, they gave up their first- and second-round picks this year and their first-round choices in 2013 and 2014. But if Griffin can become the franchise quarterback the Redskins have been trying to find for at least two decades, it will be worth every bit of what they paid and then some.

Both the Redskins and Griffin have been coy about the quarterback coming to Washington. For a while, it looked like the Colts were wavering between Griffin and Luck. Lately, there have been strong signs that Luck was their man and that was confirmed tonight.

The Redskins would have been happy with either Luck, who has been called the best quarterback prospect in 20 years, or Griffin, and they were perfectly content to let the Colts make their pick and take the QB that Indianapolis bypassed.

Although the Redskins organization may have been happy with either choice, their fans clearly wanted RG3 to come to D. C. Tonight, on what some were calling Griffmas, they got their wish.
