What's the latest on the Redskins coaching search?
San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is rumored to be the front runner for the vacant head coaching job with the Detroit Lions. But now a new candidate has emerged for the Lions job.
Former Titans HC Mike Munchak to interview Friday with Lions about HC job. Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt frontrunner. Munchak also PSU finalist— Ed Werder (@Edwerderespn) January 7, 2014
Whether or not Munchak gets the offer, it appears clear Detroit is considering other options beyond Whisenhunt, which could bode well for Washington. The Chargers coordinator has Redskins ties, he played for the team briefly as a tight end under coach Joe Gibbs. Whisenhunt also took the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl as head coach, and many consider him a great candidate to work with Robert Griffin III and the Redskins offense.

With San Diego still in the playoffs, Whisenhunt cannot interview with other teams about their head coaching openings. The Redskins have a long list of candidates, but given the option, would likely want to bring Whisenhunt in to meet with team brass. If Detroit makes a somewhat surprising move before Whisenhunt is available, things could work out well for Washington if indeed hisenhunt proves to be the team's No. 1 choice as head coach.
