Redskins center Will Montgomery said Friday that he intends to appeal the $10,000 fine he received for kicking Giants defensive tackle Linval Joseph.
Montgomery said he was attempting to protect himself last Sunday. The sixth-year professional was on the turf attempting to recover an Alfred Morris fumble when Joseph began dragging Montgomery by the leg.
Joseph appeared to stomp on Montgomery, but changed his mind before delivering a glancing blow. Joseph was fined $7,875.
“I have to protect myself,” Montgomery said. “A guy’s dragging me across the ground and potentially twisting my ankle or whatever else.”
“I’m not going to let a guy drag me,” he added. “And I can’t push him, obviously, because I’m on the ground. So I used my leg to get him off me. ...As far as I'm concerned, it's over with, except for the appeal.”
Montgomery also was fined for clipping in the Tampa Bay game.
