'Open list of candidates' for head coaching job

A Denver Broncos fan holds a sign for the team to hire current ESPN Monday night commentator Jon Gruden (not pictured) as head coach during the game against the San Diego Chargers at Invesco Field. The Chargers defeated the Broncos 33-28.

Now that the firing of Mike Shanahan is official, welcome to the crazy season. Until a new head coach is introduced for the Washington Redskins, expect to hear a litany of names and rumors about the new boss of the Burgundy and Gold.

When Shanahan took the Redskins job, the team was an absolute mess coming off two seasons with the underqualified Jim Zorn at the helm. In 2014, the Redskins will have some key pieces in place, most importantly quarterback Robert Griffin III. Beyond RG3, the Skins still have talent, particularly on offense with Trent Williams, Pierre Garçon and Alfred Morris.

Any coach will have his questions before coming to Washington, but talk suggesting that few coaches would be interested in the job is silly. The Skins have talent, salary cap room and a coach willing to spend money; a new head coach can do far worse. The big question now: Who will it be?

A swing for the fences hire like Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden? Bring Lovie Smith back to the NFL? What about a current coordinator like Ken Whisenhunt or Mike Zimmer? Go the college route: Bill O'Brien? Art Briles? David Shaw?

Let us know who you think will next coach the Redskins in the comments.
