Shanahan: RG3 is clearly our starting quarterback

(Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports)

It seems like every time Redskins coach Mike Shanahan talks lately, it generates controversy. On Monday Shanahan talked at length and covered a litany of topics, most interestingly the play of Kirk Cousins and how it relates to Robert Griffin III.

Shanahan praised Cousins play Sunday in Atlanta, but also cautioned that people not get too carried away by the second-year player from Michigan State. Cousins completed 29 of 45 passes for 381 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. The turnovers obviously hurt the Redskins, but Cousins also looked poised in the pocket and made a number of good throws.

Asked if Cousins performance meant the Redskins had a QB controversy, Shanahan said no. The coach made clear he considers Robert Griffin III the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins. But, just to keep things curious, Shanahan said that competition is good at all positions, and the best players rise to the top.

Next season, assuming a healthy Cousins and RG3, is there any question who is the starter? Is RG3's position as secure as Shanahan says? What if Cousins continues to perform?
