Your Wednesday morning open thread:
Is Sunday's game against the Cowboys a must-win for the 1-3 Redskins? Or does the sorry state of the NFC East provide them with one (maybe two) more mulligans in the division?
The web site PredictionMachine.com says the NFC East winner will get there with only 8.1 wins. (Right now, by the way, it's got Philly claiming the crown.)
If the Redskins lose to Dallas and fall to 1-4, that would mean they'd have to go 7-4 down the stretch just to get to 8-8. And considering the opponents who remain (a list that includes the undefeated Broncos and Chiefs), I'm thinking the straightest path to the postseason for the Redskins is to take advantage of the scuffling NFC East and win all five remaining contests. In fact, I'm not sure winning four of them will get it done.
I generally don't like calling any game that doesn't mathematically eliminate a team from contention a must-win, but given the circumstances, Sunday's showdown in Big D is about as close as it gets.
