3 and Out: Shanahan's last stand?

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) passes the ball during the second quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

It's no secret Mike Shanahan likes Jay Cutler. The former Denver Broncos coach selected Cutler in the first round of the 2006 draft even though the Broncos were coming off an AFC Championship game appearance with quarterback Jake Plummer. Cutler has one of the stronger arms in the NFL, and Shanahan liked his makeup.

So it was interesting when Adam Schefter reported on ESPN that after Denver fired Shanahan in 2008, the Redskins were one of the teams interested in trading for Cutler. The Broncos eventually traded Cutler to Chicago, and he is still the quarterback for the Bears, but Schefter said that Denver made the trade with Chicago instead of Washington because they preferred Bears QB Kyle Orton over former Redskin Jason Campbell.

So what if Cutler landed in Washington instead? The assumption would go that the Redskins then have a franchise quarterback, and when Shanahan joined the team in 2010 the coach would have the quarterback he always wanted. In turn, the Skins likely would not have made the trade to acquire Robert Griffin III.

If the Skins had Cutler, what would the team look like now? Better? Worse? Knowing everything that trading for RG3 cost, the NFC East title run in 2012, and the abyss that is the 2013 season, would you rather have Cutler or Griffin? Let us know in the comments.
