Who should be the Redskins new return man?
Your Tuesday morning open thread:
With Richard Crawford sidelined for the season because of a knee injury, the Redskins are once again in the market for a punt returner.
For now, it seems as though the salary-cap strapped team hopes to the fill the void from within. The list of candidates includes veterans DeAngelo Hall and Santana Moss, speedy wide receiver Aldrick Robinson and rookies Chris Thompson and Skye Dawson, according to Coach Mike Shanahan. Another rookie, Nick Williams, had extensive experience in college.
It’s been a while for Hall and Moss. And experience is a factor for the others.
Hall has returned 16 punts in the NFL, but only three since the 2007 season. Moss has returned 112 punts and taken three back for touchdowns, but he hasn’t returned one in a regular season game since 2009.
None of the others, meantime, have returned a single punt in an NFL game that mattered.
Shanahan wouldn’t tip his hand Monday afternoon when speaking to reporters. “There are a lot of possibilities,” he said.
Indeed there are. But is the right returner currently on the roster?
