Your Tuesday morning open thread:
Doug Williams, the Redskins’ new personnel executive, says he’s confident that Michael Sam’s draft status will be determined by his ability to rush the passer, not his sexual orientation.
“No. 1, we all need to take our hats off to the young guy for being so courageous and strong and doing what he did,” Williams said on 106.7 The Fan, asked how the Redskins will evaluate Sam, a Missouri defensive end and the SEC’s co-defensive player of the year.
On Monday, the Redskins announced Williams’ return to the organization as a high-ranking member of the front office. Among Williams’ responsibilities is the evaluation of college players.
“At the same time,” Williams said, “as a NFL executive in the personnel [dept.], I think he’s going to be judged just like anyone else. I think with Michael Sam coming out, eventually there probably will be some others that do that same thing.”
“Eventually,” Williams added, “it’s going to get to that point, can Michael Sam help any one of the teams in the National Football League win a championship? I think when they put his tape on, and see where he fits, I think they are going to judge him along that line. You have to, because for five years at the college level, his teammates accepted him and they went out played and they played their behinds off … and nobody got caught up in what his sexuality was. The NFL has to do the same thing.”
Williams did acknowledge that there could be some differing “opinions” in the locker room. But that, he said, should not preclude a team from drafting Sam.
“There’s no doubt in my mind … everybody is not going to be on the same page,” Williams said. “At the end of the day, you’re going to have be able to work through it. Hopefully this guy gets the respect that he deserves and people treat him as their teammate …and the No. 1 thing [is] can he help me win football games?”
Okay, now you’ve had two-plus days to digest the Sam news. You’ve also now heard what an NFL executive has to say about the situation.
What’s your take? Will Sam’s announcement affect his draft stock? If so, why?
