Brian Orakpo says he hopes the addition of versatile defensive lineman Jason Hatcher will force opposing teams to “pick and choose” which Redskins’ pass rushing threat to focus on stopping in 2014.

“Everybody knows, especially around this organization, what Big Hatch is all about,” Orakpo said Thursday.

Indeed, Hatcher, who signed with the Redskins earlier this month, is coming off a career year with the Cowboys. In the rivals’ two meetings last season, the 31-year-old recorded two sacks, eight tackles, two stuffs and a forced fumble.

“He’s a guy that presents a physical presence,” Orakpo said of Hatcher, who is listed as 6 foot 6, 299-pounds. “He’s a huge defensive tackle that can penetrate and still be able to sack the quarterback. Not just penetrate and push, but he can actually get there and make things happen. Force fumbles and create all sorts of havoc.”

In all, Hatched amassed a career-high 11 sacks in 2013, including eight against NFC East opponents. Adding his pass rushing prowess to a unit that already features two Pro Bowl caliber outside linebackers, Orapko said, should result in a tough decision for offensive coordinators when deciding whom to attempt to shut down.

“You’re going to have to pick and choose,” said Orakpo, who also noted that the Redskins intend implement a defensive philosophy that will allow himself and Ryan Kerrigan to get after the quarterback more often next season.

“Now,” Orakpo added, “with our new philosophy and the way we’re going to approach defense and our attacking style, you’re going to have to pick and chose. You’re going to see a tweaked game from myself. You’re going to see a tweaked game from Ryan to [complement] what we’re doing up front and make it a lot easier on the backend and the defense as a whole.”
