Veteran defensive end Adam Carriker can resume practicing with the Redskins this week, a team spokesman confirmed Wednesday morning.

Carriker has been sidelined since early last season after three surgeries to repair a torn quadriceps tendon in his right leg. On Tuesday, the NFL’s transactions report listed Carriker as having returned to practice, thus opening a 21-day window during which the Redskins will evaluate his progress and decide whether to activate the 29-year-old, place him on season-ending injured reserve or release him.

Carriker was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list at the outset of training camp.

In September, he said he had “no doubt” in his mind that he would return and it wasn’t a question “if” but rather “when.”
