Rich Tandler breaks down the new Redskins coaching staff
Mike Shanahan selected 21 players in the 2011 and 2012 drafts, and the 17 who remain on the roster are set to enter a critical stage in their development. In the coming weeks, Redskins Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will take a look at what those players have accomplished thus far and what they still must do in order to solidify their status in the NFL.
Who: Adam Gettis
Position: Offensive line
Draft year/round/pick: 2012/5th/141st
Career to date:
Gettis made the team as a rookie but he was a spectator the entire season as he was on the inactive list for all 16 games. Over the offseason he worked on his strength, particularly in this upper body. He had a good training camp and he again made the final 53-man roster as a backup guard.
He was active for every game in 2013 and he got on the field for special teams duty in 13 games. Gettis appeared on the stat sheet when he bulldozed his way for five yards after a short kickoff found its way into his hands against the Giants in early December.
But reserve offensive linemen usually don’t see any action from scrimmage unless someone gets hurt and the line remained remarkably healthy all year. He finally saw his first snaps on offense when Kory Lichtensteiger left the December blowout loss against the Chiefs in the fourth quarter. Gettis played 17 snaps in that game and four more in the season finale against the Giants.
Outlook for 2014:
With the change in coaching staffs there could be a ton of opportunity on the offensive line. A change to a blocking scheme based more on power running plays than on zone blocking plays could be coming.
Whether there is a change in the primary blocking scheme or not, there still would be opportunity at guard. Right guard Chris Chester was very inconsistent in 2013 and he is on the books for a $3 million salary this year. They may want to go younger and cheaper at that position and Gettis ($570,000 salary) qualifies on both counts.
Gettis likely would have to bulk up if he wants to take advantage of a change in base scheme. He is listed at 293 and the ideal weight for a guard in a power running game starts at about 310.
