Florio: "Need a coach who truly wants RG3"

There are now two known blips on the Redskins’ coaching search radar.

The Charlotte Observer is reporting that Washington will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott this weekend. Carolina has a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and NFL rules allow coaches such as McDermott on Saturday and Sunday.

So it should be a busy couple of days for the Redskins. They have requested permission to interview Seahawks offensive coordinator Darryl Bevell. His team is also enjoying a first-round playoff bye.

McDermott, 39, has been the Panthers’ defensive coordinator since 2011. His aggressive defense ranked second in the NFL this year and received much of the credit for the Panthers’ rise from a 7-9 record in 2012 to the second seed in the playoffs this year.

McDermott has never been a head coach at any level. He was with the Eagles in various capacities from 1999-2010 including a years as defensive coordinator in 2010.
