With the Redskins season over, CSN Washington will examine free agents from playoff rosters that could make an impact for Washington.
Who: 49ers at Packers
When: Sunday, January 5, 4:40 pm, FOX
The Redskins’ top three cornerbacks are all free agents and they could probably use an upgrade at the position even if they are able to sign all three. Sam Shields was a nickel back and part-time starter for the Packers for his first three years in the league before becoming a starter this season. He has 13 interceptions in his four seasons and he is decent against the run. You may remember Shields picking off Tony Romo’s fourth-quarter pass to set up the Packers’ go-ahead TD earlier this year. Oh, and he's only 26 years old. In short, there’s a lot to like, keep an eye on him.
If the Redskins decide to abandon the zone blocking scheme in the running game and go with a power scheme they could take a look at 49ers center Jonathan Goodwin. At age 35 wouldn’t be part of a youth movement on the line but he would provide solid blocking and durability while the Redskins rebuild their line. Goodwin hasn’t missed a game since the 2008 season.
