Update: The Redskins have formally announced the signing of Grossman.
The Redskins have re-signed quarterback Rex Grossman, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.
Grossman was the team’s third-string quarterback last season behind Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.
Grossman was in uniform for only two games in 2012 and did not take a snap. But the 32-year-old played an invaluable role as a mentor to the Redskins’ two rookie signal callers and also lined up as the scout team quarterback in practice.
With no specific timetable for Griffin’s return from major knee surgery, Grossman’s role could be more significant early in 2013. If Griffin is not ready at the start of the regular season, he could be called upon to serve as Cousins’ backup.
Grossman’s deal was first reported by ProFootballTalk.com.
The source confirmed the deal is for one year.
The Redskins are also reportedly pursuing former West Virginia quarterback Pat White, perhaps to simulate Griffin's athleticism during offseason workouts.
