White makes most of preseason opportunity

Instant analysis from Tampa: Redskins 30, Buccaneers 12

Game Recap: For the 22 Redskins’ regulars who did not suit up, Thursday night’s preseason finale meant nothing. For many others, nothing meant more. One such player was rookie running back Chris Thompson. After fumbling twice earlier this exhibition season, the fifth round pick needed a signature play to punch his ticket to the 53-man roster. It didn’t take long – late in the first quarter, he zigged and zagged his way to a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown. The score put the Redskins ahead 17-0 on a night where they were never threatened at Raymond James Stadium. Although the roster won’t be finalized until Saturday at 6 p.m., Thompson can certainly sleep easier now.

Key Moment: David Amerson led the nation in interceptions as a sophomore at N.C. State. Well, he’s now got a pick in the pros – and it came off his former Wolfpack teammate Mike Glennon. In the second quarter, Glennon threw behind his receiver and Amerson made an athletic, leaping grab, then raced 35 yards to the Buccaneers’ 9-yard line. Three plays later, Pat White rumbled into the end zone from seven yards out to put the Redskins ahead 27-6, a lead they took into halftime.

Player of the Game: Kicker Kai Forbath was a perfect 3 of 3 on field goals, including a 47-yarder in the third quarter. He finished the preseason 7 of 7. Just as important, the second year kicker also continued to show improved distance and hangtime on his kickoffs.

Roster Impact: Evan Royster had the strong showing he needed, gaining 59 yards on 11 carries and scoring a touchdown. That effort, combined with the shoulder injury that knocked Keiland Williams out of the game, figures to bolster Royster’s chances. Given Thompson’s strong performance, it’s possible the Redskins will be forced to keep four tailbacks – Alfred Morris, Roy Helu Jr., Royster and Thompson.

From the Locker Room:

Thompson on his chances of making the team: “I will feel very confident going to bed. I know I left it out there on the field tonight and even this whole preseason.”

Dez Briscoe (two receptions, 75 yards) injured his shoulder but feels good about making the 53: “I always feel confident. I had a pretty good camp. I’ll let the chips fall where they may.”

Brandon Meriweather on his return to the field: “It could be better. It could be a lot better. I didn’t have the energy I usually carry around. It was probably because I didn’t make no plays. But it was nice to be out there.”

Royster on his game: “I think I played well. I have no idea what they are thinking in the head office, but I hope I made the decision hard for them.”
